The production process involves several steps: Latex collection through tapping, coagulation using formic acid, sheet formation to achieve uniform thickness, ribbing to create parallel ridges or ribs on one side of the sheet. The sheets are air dried using natural air circulation or smoked in a specialized smoking chamber.
Ribbed Smoked Sheets commonly known as RSS are coagulated rubber sheets processed from fresh field latex.
The smoking process helps to preserve the rubber, and improve its physical properties such as tear resistance and resilience. The ribs aid in air circulation during smoking. Following smoking, the sheets are dried to remove excess moisture, ensuring quality and preventing mould formation.
RSS is graded by visual examination based on the norms given in the International Standards of Quality and Packing for Natural Rubber Grades, popularly known as the Green Book.
The sheets are graded as RSS 1X, RSS 1, RSS 2, RSS 3, RSS 4 and RSS 5 based on factors like colour, cleanliness, texture, and blemishes, with higher grades exhibiting lighter colour, uniform texture, and fewer impurities and are then packed in bales.
Application:
RSS 1X: It is used for premium grade tyres such as Aero tyre and other technical rubber goods that require superior physical properties and durability.
